Typography

# 24 Remember.Growth is only possible as a product of history. Without memory, innovation is merely novelty. History gives growth a direction. But a memory is never perfect. Every memory is a degraded or composite image of a previous moment or event. That’s what makes us aware of its quality as a past and not a present. It means that every memory is new, a partial construct different from its source, and, as such, a potential for growth itself.

Comments on Reading

I found it very interesting when reading about what all goes in to a logo and how precise it must be. Like how the reading said that a logo should explain every aspect of the company and reflect its additudes and values. I found that in a way unreal.
I found it hilarious in the part when talking about labels, that they said labels are usually used in drawings or logos to hide a weak idea. SO TRUE!

Chip Kidd, John Gall, Definitions.

Chip Kidd is a well known graphic designer, author, and editor. He is best known for his innovative book covers. He challenges the viewer, for example: The book is about a big horse, but on the cover of the books he only shows part of the mane. He keeps the viewer wanting more, and wondering what the book is about.

John Gall is a well known artist who designs book covers. He is known as someone who pushed himself throughout his life to get where he is now. He started off painting signs for a grocery store and now he is a famous designer. He has a very unique out of the ordinary type of style that grabs the viewers attention.

SeriesA succession of usually continuously numbered issues or volumes of a publication, published with related authors or subjects and similar formats.

Sequence: A related or continuous series. A following of one thing after another; succession.

Sign: An act or gesture used to convey an idea, a desire, information, or a command. Stop, Stop Sign.

Index: Something that serves to guide, point out, or otherwise facilitate reference. Guide, Map.

Symbol: Something that represents something else by association, resemblance, or convention, especially a material object used to represent something invisible. Mac, Apple.

Ten Bookcovers

Three bookcovers to expand on:
- The book called Fresh.
I like the layout and how blunt the image is. Its funny because it sort of contradicts itself, because the way it is being killed is NOT fresh what so ever. I like the way the text looks like blood.
- The book called Three Wishes. I thought the cupcake was a good idea, specially when your younger wishing when blowing out a candle is fun and wimsical. The color tones and patterns are very childish and soft.
-The STray shopping Carts of North America. I love how the imagery is used, again straight to the point, very creative design though. The color palette is earthy tones.

Comment and Question

I have never thought of a sign as how they explain it through the reading. For example: Stop means stop but it can mean alot of things also, like danger. I found that interesting.. because when I see a stop sign i just think stop, not the other meanings that come along with it.
Im confused about Descartes, (the first modern philospher) and why he is considered the method of doubt..?
